I’ve been working through different retro-futurism styles and wanted to better understand how design language shifts between eras.
This time I put together a simple comparison between Art Deco and Dieselpunk—two styles that both center around machines, but approach them very differently.
Art Deco leans toward symmetry, clean surfaces, and decorative elements, while Dieselpunk focuses more on function, wear, and exposed mechanics.
Putting this side by side helped me see how color, texture, and structure all work together to define a style.
Still learning as I go, but this was a helpful exercise in thinking more intentionally about design choices.
Parts of this comparison were organized with the help of AI as a tool to structure ideas.
